Description

The School House Dining Hall at Sherborne School is a Grade I listed building located on Abbey Road. This structure served as the main school building from the school's re-establishment by Edward II until around 1850. The current building was constructed or rebuilt in 1606 or 1608 and underwent restorations in 1670 and 1886, during which the south wall and waggon roof were reconstructed.

The dining hall is a single-storey building featuring a balustraded parapet on the south wall. From the left to the right, there is a two-light window above the entrance to the main court of the school, a doorway with a four-centred arch, and the arms of Edward VI above it, created by Roger Moore in 1600. Additionally, there are two restored 17th-century windows with four transomed lights and a modern bay window. Inside, there is a statue of Edward VI by Godfrey Arnold, dated 1614.

The School House Dining Hall is part of a group of buildings that surround the greens immediately to the north of the Abbey Church of St Mary, forming a cohesive architectural context with the church and other school buildings.
