Description
Bow House is a building located on Church Lane, dating from 1625. It has been part of Sherborne School since 1916 and is believed to have origins in the 16th or 17th century. The building has undergone significant restoration and alterations from the late 19th century to the early 20th century and beyond.
It features two storeys and an attic, topped with a stone slate roof that includes three hipped dormers. The exterior has a coved cornice and a carved fascia, which are evident from photographic evidence dating to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The first floor is finished in plaster with applied timber-framing, while the ground floor is constructed of stone.
There are three window bays on the facade, with four-light casements featuring modern leaded glazing on the first floor. The ground floor includes, from left to right, two two-tier, two-light casement windows with diamond and lozenge-shaped lead glazing, and a door with cover strips at the right-hand end. Bow House was formerly known as The Sun Inn and has a large wrought iron lamp bracket at the south angle of the building.
Bow House forms a group with several nearby structures, including The Cemetery Gate, The Abbey Gate House, No 2 (which includes premises occupied by Gilham Bros), No 3 (also including premises occupied by Gilham Bros), No 88, The Conduit, No 90, and Saints John Building (The Parade) on Cheap Street.
