Description
ABBEY ROAD 1. 1625 (South East Side) Chapel at Sherborne School ST 6316 1/5 28.11.50. I GV 2. 2-storey range across the north end of the Library range. C15 hall, probably the hall of the Abbot's lodging [now incorporated into the modern chapel]; rebuilt late C12 or early C13 undercroft. Hall roof of C15 style. 2 bays added in 1855 by R C Carpenter and Benjamin Ingelow to give a north aisle. First War Memorial extension of 1922 at the west end by Reginald Blomfield. Exterior to north aisle [work of R H Carpenter and Benjamin Ingelow] has 2-centred windows with tracery above; giant buttresses; cloister openings below; the latter continue northwards from west corner to form a west cloister walk with similar openings. First War Memorial built above southernmost bay of west cloister walk. 1 window faces east, in north facing gable, 2 windows. South-west end of Chapel faces on to Abbey Road; lofty pointed window of 5-lights with dripmould and tracery. Graded I only on account of its containing medieval remains of the Abbey of Sherborne.
