Description

The Chapel at Sherborne School is a significant building dating back to 1625, located on the southeast side of Abbey Road. It features a two-storey range at the north end of the Library range. The chapel incorporates a 15th-century hall, which is likely the hall of the Abbot's lodging, and a late 12th or early 13th-century undercroft. The hall roof is designed in the style of the 15th century. In 1855, two bays were added to create a north aisle, designed by R C Carpenter and Benjamin Ingelow.

The chapel includes a First World War Memorial extension from 1922 at the west end, created by Reginald Blomfield. The exterior of the north aisle, also the work of R H Carpenter and Benjamin Ingelow, features two-centred windows with tracery above, giant buttresses, and cloister openings below. These openings extend northwards from the west corner to form a west cloister walk with similar openings. A First World War Memorial is situated above the southernmost bay of the west cloister walk.

The chapel has one window facing east in the north-facing gable and two additional windows. The southwest end of the chapel faces Abbey Road and features a lofty pointed window with five lights, complete with a dripmould and tracery. The chapel is listed as Grade I primarily due to its incorporation of medieval remains from the Abbey of Sherborne.

The surrounding buildings of Sherborne School create a cohesive group with the Abbey Church of St Mary, located immediately to the north of the chapel.
