Description

The Chapel of the Infirmary, also known as the Deanery, was originally part of the Infirmary and features five bays of arcading and aisles, along with a two-bay chancel at the east end. A 12th-century arch at the east end of Infirmary Lane serves as the entrance to the chapel, and part of the chancel arch can still be seen on the west wall of the Deanery, showcasing an ornamented arch, nook shaft, and shaft rings. On the north side, there are four bays of 12th-century chapel arcading with richly decorated arches and capitals, supported by alternating round and octagonal columns. The chancel is now part of the Deanery, and the upper storey, known as The Dean's study, retains the ribbed vaulting and arcade from the 12th century. Both the north and south sides feature 12th-century window arches with nook shafts and scalloped capitals. In the 18th century, buff-colored brick dwellings were constructed on the south and east sides, and in the 19th century, an attic storey was added. The south front includes a large brick bow with three windows, a single window range to the west of the bow, and three windows to the east. The return east side of the bow has one window range and the stone quoins of an earlier medieval building. The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, except for those in the bow. The roof is covered with old Cambridgeshire tiles and features a 19th-century gabled dormer on the bow. The Chapel of the Infirmary is part of a group that includes the Dark Cloister, Powcher's Hall, the Painted Chamber (Walsingham House), the Black Hostelry, the Cellarers Chamber, and the Cellarers House (Boarding House of King's School).
