Description
Powcher's Hall, located at the northwest end of Infirmary Lane, was originally the Blood Letting House built in the early 14th century for monks undergoing the Ely practice of blood letting every six weeks. In 1416, Prior Powcher commissioned a near-complete reconstruction of the hall in the Infirmary for those who had been bled. A third storey, which is timber-framed, was added in the early 16th century.
On the south side, there are five bays of 12th-century Infirmary arcading featuring alternating round and octagonal columns with richly ornamental arches and capitals. Above this, three tall round-headed clerestorey windows with nook shafts can be found, which were originally on the outside face. The nave arches are now blocked and replaced with 20th-century windows. The north front is buttressed, and the second storey includes some timber-framing with brick nogging. The windows have been significantly altered, with some being double-hung sashes with glazing bars, while others are mullioned and transomed casements. The roofs are tiled, with the eastern part having a steep pitch and a 16th-century roof structure. Inside, the hall features moulded beams.
Powcher's Hall is part of a group that includes the Dark Cloister, the Painted Chamber (Walsingham House), the Chapel of the Infirmary (Deanery), the Black Hostelry and Cellarers Chamber, and the Cellarers House (Boarding House of King's School).
