Description

The Painted Chamber, also known as Walsingham House, is a Grade I listed building that serves as a boarding house for King's School. It was constructed in the early 14th century by Sacrist Alan of Walsingham for his own use. The building is made of Carr Stone rubble with stone dressings that may be Barnaok or a similar material, and it features various brick patching and brick parapets. The hall is situated above a vaulted undercroft.

On the south side, facing Infirmary Lane, there is a section of the 12th-century Infirmary arcade, which includes a richly decorated arch and capitals. The east and west facades are supported by buttresses with splayed internal angles. The windows are squared and consist of two lights topped with trefoil arched heads. The northwest corner features angle buttresses that rise to an octagonal turret at the level of the parapet, while the northeast corner has an octagonal staircase tower that rises above a large buttress with three offsets. A prominent chimney breast extends from the north side above a single-storey projection with a lean-to roof.

Inside, at the south end, there is an impressive 12th-century doorway with a semi-circular tympanum, which originally served as an external entrance from the north aisle of the Infirmary to the monks' cemetery.

The Painted Chamber is part of a group that includes the Dark Cloister, Powcher's Hall, the Chapel of the Infirmary (Deanery), The Black Hostelry, the Cellarers Chamber, and the Cellarers House, all of which are associated with the King's School.
