Description

The Cellarers House, now serving as a boarding house for King's School, is located at the southern end of Infirmary Lane. It likely predates the Infirmary itself. The ground floor features substantial walls and a Norman barrel vault. Much of the original structure was demolished in 1770 when a new dwelling was constructed on the south side. The north side showcases two bays of the 12th-century Infirmary arcade, adorned with richly decorated arches and capitals. The roof is tiled and includes flat-headed dormers. The buff-colored house on the south side was built in 1770, with an upper attic storey added in the 19th century. The south front has five window ranges with double-hung sashes that have glazing bars, set in flush cased frames. A central 19th-century gabled porch projects from the front. The west front, dating from the 19th century, features two stone mullioned bays in the style of the 14th century and two crow-stepped gables. The roof is tiled and includes five 19th-century gabled dormers on the south front. The Cellarers House is part of a group that includes The Dark Cloister, Powcher's Hall, the Painted Chamber (Walsingham House), the Chapel of the Infirmary (Deanery), and the Black Hostelry, all of which are related to the Cathedral of The Holy Trinity.
