Description
Prior Crauden's Chapel was built by Prior Crauden in 1324-25, located at the southwest corner of the hall. The chapel is constructed over a 13th-century vaulted undercroft and is primarily made of Barnack stone ashlar, with clunch (chalk) used for the carved interior. It features two bays, with angle buttresses and a central buttress on both the north and south fronts. The east bay has two pointed arched windows with decorated tracery, while the west bay contains a small, low window. Both the east and west gable ends are adorned with wide pointed arched windows that showcase fine decorated tracery. An octagonal entrance and staircase tower with a stone spiral staircase is situated at the northwest corner. Inside, the chapel is richly carved and boasts a rare and particularly fine 14th-century mosaic tile floor, featuring animal and foliage designs, along with a panel in front of the altar depicting Adam and Eve.
