Description
The Stables to Bishop's Palace, also known as No 9, is a Grade I listed building dating from the 13th century. It is constructed of Carr stone rubble with Barnack stone dressings. The north front was remodeled in the 16th century and faced with red brick. Originally, this building served as a range of stables with lofts and living quarters above, but it has since been converted into a single dwelling.
The building has two storeys. The south front features narrow lancet windows with arched heads on the first storey and a loft doorway accessed by an external wooden staircase. The ground storey includes 20th-century casement windows and garage accommodation. The north front, built around 1550 by Bishop Goodrich, showcases red brick with stone dressings. At the east end, there is a stone-dressed crow-stepped gable with a loft entrance doorway. Several blocked window openings remain, some with four-centred arched heads. The east end also features the blocked upper part of a four-centred arched carriageway, complete with a squared hood mould and carved spandrels, as well as a square carved stone panel above. This carriageway originally opened onto a stable yard on the south side, which has a corresponding four-centred archway. The roof is tiled.
The Stables to Bishop's Palace is part of a group that includes Nos 2 to 8, The Great Hall (Bishop's residence), The Queen's Hall (Headmaster's House), the wall to the garden of the Bishop's residence, the Guest Quarters of the Monastery, the walls to the Guest Quarters of the Monastery, Ely Porta, Prior's House (Boarding House of the King's School), Prior Crauden's Chapel, the walls to the garden of the Prior's House, Ely Porta, the Barn and Storehouse of the Monastery, and the wall to the Barn and Storehouse, along with the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Bishop's Palace, and the wall to the Bishop's Palace.
