Description
The Almonry is a Grade I listed building located at the east end of a long range of structures that back onto the High Street on the north side, which includes the sacristy, Gate, and Goldsmith's Tower. The space between the Almonry and the Sacristy to its west was filled in during the 19th century in a similar style. This building is a late 12th-century construction made of Carr Stone rubble with Barnack stone dressings. It is built over a vaulted undercroft dating from around 1200, featuring ribs that spring from central octagonal columns with moulded capitals and bases.
Originally, the upper storey housed a school, chambers for the Sacrist and Chaplain, dormitories, and a chapel at the east end. Two blocked lancet windows remain in the gable end. The undercroft was used to feed the poor. The north front features 19th or 20th-century windows on the first storey and small, stone-dressed windows with cusped arches on the ground storey. The south front has similar windows, some with two lights. The roof is tiled and includes 19th-century gabled dormers and moulded brick chimneys.
The Almonry, along with the wall to the gardens of the Almonry and Painted Chamber, the Sacristy, Gate, and Goldsmith's Tower, forms a group with all the listed buildings on High Street, except for No. 2.
