Description

The buildings at 7 and 9 Market Place date from the early 19th century and were originally two separate brick structures, one configured as a tenement at the time of listing. A wing from the 17th century extends to the rear, although it has been significantly altered. The main front sections are three storeys high, with a three-window arrangement at the east end and two storeys and attics with a two-window arrangement at the west end. The windows are double-hung sashes with single vertical glazing bars, set within flush cased frames. Brick bands run between the ground and first storeys, and above the first-floor windows in both blocks. The ground floor features a carriageway with exposed timber framing and an early 19th century shop front, characterised by pilasters and a cornice. The roofs are tiled, incorporating a mixture of old Cambridge tiles and 20th-century replacements, and have a brick dentil eaves course. The western block includes one flat-headed dormer window. The building has group value, contributing to the character of the Market Place.
