Description

The South West Classrooms at Sherborne School were built between 1869 and 1870, designed by architects W H Slater and R H Carpenter. This two-storey block extends south along Abbey Road from the First War Memorial extension to the Chapel. It features five window bays, with three more closely spaced. The building has a stone slate roof and a stone front, complemented by a moulded eaves cornice and string courses. The lower string courses on the east side are set higher, indicating a place where an extension was originally planned. The upper windows are adorned with gables above. On the west side, the ground floor has four-light windows from left to right, a doorway with a pointed head and square drip mould, and at the south end, there are two three-light windows with a four-light window in the center. The first floor in the south gable end includes a two-tier five-light window. The South West Classrooms are part of a group of buildings surrounding the greens immediately north of the Abbey Church of St Mary.
