Description
The Old School is a building designed in the Jacobethan style, originally constructed to accommodate schoolrooms for 120 girls and 120 boys, with a classroom situated between them. It features a central block with crosswings, built from squared rubble with freestone dressings and topped with slate roofs. The structure includes two octagonal chimneys with oversailing upper courses, along with a cylindrical chimney at the rear and stone gutters.
The central block is accessed via steps leading up to an open entrance loggia, which has a central Tudor arch flanked by two lower arches of a similar style. Behind these arches is a central Tudor doorway that leads to the former classroom, flanked by two-light windows designed in the early 16th-century style. Each return of the loggia also features a Tudor doorway leading to the former schoolrooms.
The gabled crosswings are adorned with copings and kneelers, and they have cruciform loops at their apexes, along with three-light early 16th-century style windows. The end elevations showcase a central steeply gabled bay that is slightly set forward, featuring an apex loop and a three-light window at the front, while the outer bays each contain a two-light window in the same style. At the rear, the north wing's west gable has a three-light early 16th-century style window.
There is a single-storey lean-to infill between the wings, which was noted to be in poor condition at the time of inspection. The south wing has been extended to the west, featuring a single-storey gabled south porch with simplified detailing, paired sash windows with deep lintels, and an octagonal stone chimney located in the roof slope above the porch.
