Description

Gadlys Higher Standard School, built in the Jacobethan style with eastern influences, is a symmetrical school building designed for boys on the left and girls on the right, with each half being entirely self-contained. This design results in the absence of a main entrance. The building steps down to either end and features dark, coursed, and bull-nosed local stone with 'Red Wilderness' dressings, including quoins, sill bands, a plinth band, and gable parapets topped with conical finials. The roofs are slate.

The tallest section in the middle is advanced and includes an octagonal tower with a swept roof and an octagonal cupola crowned by an iron weathervane. The front face has a blind roundel and a date plaque with a rounded top below it. The building is adorned with camber-headed horned sash windows that have voussoirs and keystones, arranged in pairs on both floors. Lean-tos on either side feature kneelers and side doors. The middle section is flanked by 3-bay blocks, with the centers set back. Each side has three Jacobethan-style gables, with the central gables for the Boys and Girls Halls being taller. The upper parts of these gables contain three blind arched openings, while the halls feature tall 3-light windows with labels and flanking circular windows, all with small pane glazing. There are two camber-headed windows on the flanking gables with horned 12-pane sashes, and the inner gables have cambered doors for boys and girls with small pane tympani. The lines of these gables are continued downwards by set back lean-tos. The ends of the building have twin gables with similar detailing and glazing, and the taller hall ranges also feature gables with split thermal windows. A U-shaped yard is located at the center rear.

Internally, the main halls are bordered by classrooms that have glazed sides, allowing the headmaster and headmistress to observe classes in progress. The outside windows are set high to prevent children from looking out. The classroom interiors feature canted boarded ceilings with circular ventilators.
