Description
The building is a distinctive tall and narrow three-storey plus part-basement engine house, constructed with snecked rubble facings, bull-nosed quoins, yellow brick dressings, and stone sills. It features a modern slated roof with wide eaves. The front has four windows with cambered heads, long and short quoins in pale brickwork (including some large blocks), and modern small-pane sash and case windows that mimic the original design. The ground floor has built-up brickwork quoins at the center above a later external stair leading to a red brick platform on the left side. The side elevations include one window and a boarded door at the left end, along with a tall arched opening spanning two storeys that has modern glazed infill (with a proposed canopy) at the right end.
The rear elevation has similar detailing and is linked to adjacent masonry revetment by a rubble wall at the west end. It can be accessed via a modern high-level metal bridge through a brickwork opening at the center. The rear features bull-nosed quoins and yellow-brick voussoirs above three stepped arches (which are blocked) at the basement level, facing a massive revetment wall. This revetment forms three sides of a rectangle and connects to the corner of the main furnace bank to the north of the engine house.
The interiors were modernized in 1989 but retain the original floor levels and substantial fabric of the massive transverse beam wall, which originally supported the beam for the blowing engine.
