Description
The Elliot Colliery Winding Engine House and Engine is a rectangular building constructed from snecked rock-faced stone and coursed rubble, featuring rock-faced quoins with tooled arises and some openings surrounded by yellow brick. It has a Welsh slate roof topped with two iron exhaust chimneys. The structure is seven bays long, with round-headed windows that have multipane iron-framed glazing, and the southern side is metal-boarded.
The main gable end on the north side has a cambered-headed doorway to the left, a round-headed window to the right, and a narrow opening with a metal lintel to the left. Above, there is a wide first-floor opening with an attached metal platform, and the openings are also metal-boarded. The south gable end features a single-storey roofline of a former attached compressor house, which has an oculus above it. On the east side, there is a late 20th-century part-glazed lean-to that serves as an entrance hall and exhibition space, while behind it are the original window range and a round-arched doorway inscribed 'East Elliot Pit 1891.'
Inside, the engine house has a rendered and scored finish, with a plain dado below a continuous sill band. The floor is made of tiles and metal plates. The winding engine, made by Thornewill and Warham, dominates the interior; it features an unusual diabolo winding drum and two horizontal cylinders that were later extended for additional power. A high-pressure boiler is set into the floor, and a large pulley is suspended from above. There is a main service gantry with the casting 'Robert Morris and Bastert Ltd. Loughborough' and a side gantry marked 'Brodingham Iron and Steel Co.'
