Description

The building is a former school, dating to 1879, likely designed by the same architect as a similar school in Victoria Road. It is constructed of roughly dressed stone with ashlar quoins and dressings, featuring stone-coped tile roofs with blue tile bands and ashlar stacks. The design follows a U-plan, incorporating schoolrooms, an assembly hall projecting to the front, and masters' houses projecting to either side, linked across the front by a low wall with railings.

The architecture is Jacobethan in style. The central assembly hall is flanked by single-story schoolrooms. The assembly hall has conical vents to the roof, with a ridge running parallel to the front, and a hipped outshut to the front, punctuated by three gables with floating cornices over stone mullioned and transomed windows. The lower schoolroom blocks have similar windows to the flanking gables of right-angle wings. The wing to the right has an arched doorway beneath a tower with mullioned lantern windows surmounted by a spirelet. Each wing has an additional outer entrance bay, with a lower ridge parallel to the assembly hall, reduced fenestration, and a gabled entrance bay with finial coping and an arched doorway. Rear and side elevations exhibit a similar style with cross-gables and matching windows.

The interior includes open timber roofs and panelled doors.

The two-story masters' houses each feature similar two- and three-light windows to the gable facing the road, with similar fenestration to the inner elevation. A cross gable is present to the rear, adjoining the schoolroom. A low plinth wall runs along the front, topped by plain cast-iron railings with three cast-iron gates, flanked by piers of a robust and simple design.

The school is considered a skilled example of a Jacobethan-style building.
