Description

The Old Vicarage, also known as Church House, is a building dating from the 15th to 16th century, located on the east side of Market Place. It is timber-framed and has two storeys, featuring a first-floor overhang supported by a moulded bressummer. The building displays close-set vertical framing and includes two 18th-century sash windows and two casements, all of which have been renewed and lack glazing bars. On the left side, there is a four-light oriel window. The ground floor windows consist of 18th-century casements, along with two 19th-century windows on the left. The entrance features a plain doorway with a rectangular fanlight and a later panelled door. The eaves are coved plaster, and the roof is covered with modern tiles. Inside, the central room on the ground floor contains a small mural painting above the doorway.

The Old Vicarage is part of a group that includes the Public Library, Nos 6 and 6A, Nos 7 and 8, Walker Hall, Abbot Reginald's Gateway, the Church of St Lawrence, the Church of All Saints, the Bell Tower, Abbot Reginald's Wall, the Porter's Lodge, and various remains of the Abbey, including the west wall of the North Transept, the archway to the south of the remains, and other historical structures in the Market Place and Merstow Green.
