Description

The Public Library, located on the east side of Market Place, was built between 1908 and 1909 and designed by architect G.H. Hunt from Evesham. This classical building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features two storeys. The façade includes five casement windows set within moulded stone architraves that have keyblocks and pediments, with the two outer windows flanked by balustrades.

On the ground floor, there are semi-circular headed windows with keyblocks, a central doorway topped by a rectangular fanlight, and a multi-panelled divided door. The entrance is accentuated by a stone Roman Doric portico that is surmounted by a balustrade and urns. Additional architectural details include a string-course, stone modillion bracket eaves cornice, and a brick parapet.

The Public Library is part of a group that includes Nos 6 and 6A, Nos 7 and 8, and Walker Hall, which collectively relate to several nearby historical structures such as Abbot Reginald's Gateway, The Old Vicarage, Church of St Lawrence, Church of All Saints, The Bell Tower, Abbot Reginald's Wall, the Porter's Lodge, and the remains of the Abbey.
