Description
The Town Hall, originally built around 1586, has undergone significant alterations, particularly in the early 19th century and a remodel between 1884 and 1887 by G. H. Hunt. The building is roughcast and consists of two storeys. The gabled end to the north features a stone four-light mullioned and canted oriel window on the first storey, complete with a moulded apron and underhang. Stone quoins are present at all corners, and there are bartizans on either side. The gable includes a carved roundel with a shield of arms, the date 1887 inscribed above, and a hood mould with a poppy-head finial. There are two semi-circular headed doorways on the ground storey. The west elevation has a projecting gabled bay to the right and features three gables overall, with eight sash windows, mostly with semi-circular heads. The slate roof is topped with a clock tower. The ground storey, which was originally an arcade containing market stalls and the Town Stocks, is now largely blocked. The Town Stocks have since been re-erected outside The Almonry on Merstow Green.
