Description
Abbot Reginald's Gateway is a Grade I listed structure located on the east side of the Market Place. This gateway, dating from around 1120, features Norman architectural elements, including a single order of columns with block capitals, blind arcading on the sides, and thin triple shafts. Above the gateway is a chamber that is likely from the 15th century, constructed in a timber-framed style with a gabled roof and closely set vertical members.
The gateway is part of a group of historically significant buildings that includes the Public Library, Nos 6 and 6A, Nos 7 and 8, Walker Hall, The Old Vicarage, Church of St Lawrence, Church of All Saints, The Bell Tower, Abbot Reginald's Wall, the Porter's Lodge, the remains of the west wall of the North Transept of the Abbey, and various other structures and remains in the Market Place and Merstow Green.
