Description

King John's House, dating from around 1230, is a hall house that was part of the medieval Abbey. The hall is located on the first floor, with a similarly sized room on the ground floor and a cellar. The west wall features an early English window with fine moulding and a hood-mould decorated with dog-tooth patterns. There are traces of other early English windows with similar mouldings in the three westernmost bays of the nave, which were added between 1210 and 1230. An outside staircase is present on the west wall, south of the window, but is now concealed by Tudor Cottage. The external walls are constructed of flint with stone quoining. A plain doorway in the east wall possibly leads to a former chapel.
