Description

The Almonry is a Grade I listed building, dating back to the 15th century and earlier, originally part of the Benedictine Abbey. The structure features a combination of rubble and timber framing. The left section, made of rubble and likely from the 14th century, includes buttresses on the sides, a gable, and a 17th-century four-light mullioned window with a hood mould. The central part has a rubble base with closely set timber framing above, showcasing a five-light wood mullioned window with leaded lights, along with two windows set in chamfered reveals. The right bay is timber-framed, featuring an oversailing upper storey and a gable with carved barge-boards, as well as a three-light oriel window with renewed leaded lights. The building is topped with a Cotswold stone roof and has been well restored. It now serves as The Almonry Museum, housing items of local and rural interest, along with numerous relics from the Abbey.

The Almonry is part of a group that includes Nos 53 and 54, which incorporate the remains of the Abbey Gate, the gate and railings of No 53, the remains of the Abbey Stables, The Stocks, as well as Nos 4 and 5 Abbey Gate, and the remains of the south wall of the Abbey Precinct. This group also encompasses the Church of All Saints, the Church of St Lawrence, the Bell Tower, Abbot Reginald's Wall, The Porter's Lodge, the remains of the west wall of the North Transept of the Abbey, the archway south of the remains of the west wall of the North Transept, Abbot Reginald's Gateway, The Old Vicarage, the Public Library, Nos 6 and 6A, Nos 7 and 8, and Walker Hall in the Market Place.
