Description

Nos 53 and 54, incorporating the remains of Abbey Gate, also known as Abbey Gate House, is a fine L-shaped house built in 1711. It includes the early 14th-century Abbey Gate, or Great Gate, constructed by Abbot Chyryton. The house is made of stone and rubble, featuring two storeys, six sash windows, and two later 18th-century doorways with fanlights, three-quarter fluted Doric columns, and cornices. It has a wood modillion eaves cornice and a hipped tile roof. On the east side of No 54, there is a well-crafted moulded lead rainwater head, and the building retains many medieval characteristics, including numerous blocked openings and large semi-circular arches. The rear of No 53 contains part of the Abbey Gate, which includes one original jamb.

Inside, No 54 has been largely altered, while No 53 features a late 17th-century staircase and panelling. A bay on the right-hand side projects towards Merstow Green and has a modern upper storey built above the gateway passage, with an archway on the north return side. To the south of this bay, adjacent to the Abbey Stables, are the remains of a vaulted passage from the early 14th century.

Nos 53 and 54, along with the gate and railings of No 53, the remains of Abbey Stables, the Almonry, and The Stocks, as well as Nos 4 and 5 Abbey Gate and the remains of the south wall of Abbey Precinct, Little Abbey Lane, form a group with the Church of All Saints, the Church of St Lawrence, The Bell Tower, Abbot Reginald's Wall, The Porter's Lodge, the remains of the west wall of the North Transept of the Abbey, Abbot Reginald's Gateway, The Old Vicarage, the Public Library, Nos 6 and 6A, Nos 7 and 8, and Walker Hall in the Market Place.
