Description
The gate and railings of number 53 are an early 18th-century feature located at the front of No 53, which is the right-hand portion of Abbey Gate House. The wrought iron gate is positioned at the return to the north.
Number 53, along with number 54, the remains of Abbey Gate, the gate and railings of number 53, the remains of Abbey Stables, the Almonry, The Stocks, and numbers 4 and 5 Abbey Gate, as well as the remains of the south wall of Abbey Precinct on Little Abbey Lane, form a group with several significant structures. These include the Church of All Saints, the Church of St Lawrence, the Bell Tower, Abbot Reginald's Wall, The Porter's Lodge, the remains of the west wall of the North Transept of the Abbey, the archway to the south of the remains of the west wall of the North Transept, Abbot Reginald's Gateway, The Old Vicarage, the Public Library, numbers 6 and 6A, numbers 7 and 8, and Walker Hall in the Market Place.
