Description
These are two modest cottages dating from the early 19th century. They were built against the remaining north wall of Abbey Stables. The cottages are constructed of red brick with a pebbledash finish. They are two storeys in height. Number 4 has two sash windows and a plain wooden doorcase with a small hood and a part-glazed door. It features modillion eaves and a tiled roof. Number 5 has been altered, with two modern casement windows, a doorway, and a tiled roof. The cottages are included on the list due to their group value.
They form a group with the Remains of the south wall of Abbey Precinct; numbers 53 and 54 incorporating Remains of Abbey Gate, Gate and railings of Number 53 Abbey Stables; The Almonry; The Stocks, Merstow Green; the Church of All Saints; the Church of St Lawrence; the Bell Tower; Abbot Reginald's Wall; the Porter's Lodge; Remains of west wall of North Transept of Abbey; Archway to south of the Remains of west wall of the North Transept of Abbey; Abbot Reginald's Gateway; The Old Vicarage; Public Library; numbers 6 and 6A; numbers 7 and 8; and Walker Hall on Market Place.
