Description

The Sherring Monument is an early 18th-century table-tomb located 3 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Michael in Winterbourne Steepleton. It is made of stone and features ornamental end blocks, with two raised and round-headed panels on each side, and a hipped top block that has a heavily moulded cornice. The end blocks are richly carved with linked garlands, a skull-and-crossbones at one end, and a cherub at the other.

The left panel contains the inscription: "Here lieth the body of Henry Sherring Who Died Jan 1 17(33) Aetat 30. Also Katherine the Daughter of Henry and Ioan Sherring. Who Died June 3rd. 17(57)." The right panel features a verse epitaph: "Here I repose, And find Relief, Waiting in Hope out of this Dust, To Rise and Live, Among the Just." This monument is an ornately sculptured and well-lettered example of its type.
