Description
The Church of St Michael is a parish church located in Winterbourne Steepleton. It has origins dating back to the 11th century, with quoins to the nave, and the nave was rebuilt in the 12th century. The west tower and porch were added in the 14th century, while the chancel was constructed in the 15th century. There have been alterations, blockings, and repairs made in the 17th and 18th centuries.
The church features rubble-stone walls with Ham stone dressings and slate roofs. The nave retains long-and-short work quoins and has 12th-century north and south doorways, with the north doorway being blocked. Both doorways are plain and have roll-moulded labels. The fenestration is from the 15th century, consisting of windows with three cinquefoiled lights and vertical tracery in a two-centred head, complete with labels and head-stops. The south wall at the west end includes an early 18th-century window with two lights for the west gallery.
The west tower has three stages, with diagonal buttresses on two stages, topped by a plain parapet. It features a later 18th-century octagonal stone spire with corner pinnacles. The chancel includes a 15th-century south window with two cinquefoiled lights and vertical tracery in a two-centred head, along with a label. The south porch has a 14th-century outer entrance with chamfered jambs and a two-centred head under a label.
