Description
The Tithe Barn is a Grade I listed building located in Cerne Abbas, originally built in the late 14th century. The southern end has been partly converted into a private house, with this conversion taking place in the late 18th century, followed by a restoration in the 19th century. The structure features a chamfered stone plinth and walls made of knapped flint, with weathered stone buttresses marking the divisions between the bays. The roof is covered with stone slates, and there are brick stacks on the south gable-end and on the ridge just south of the porch.
The barn consists of five bays and includes two original opposed porches. The house, which is immediately south of the porches, has four bays. Each bay of the barn has long straight-chamfered loops. The porches feature outer entrances with double-chamfered jambs and two-centred heads, topped with gables. The house has pointed-arch windows with moulded jambs and labels above, along with metal and iron casements that have intersecting glazing-bars in the heads. The front door to the house is located one bay from the end and features a pointed and moulded arch doorhead with a fanlight that has intersecting glazing-bars, along with a plank-and-muntin door from the 20th century. The south gable wall of the building has three storeys of pointed windows, two of which are wide and feature the same design with 20th-century metal casements. The interior of the barn has been entirely reconstructed in the 20th century. The Tithe Barn is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument in Dorset.
