Description

The Tithe Barn at Barton Farm is a Grade I listed building, likely dating from the early 14th century. It is constructed of coursed rubble and ashlar, featuring a high-pitched stone-tiled roof with projecting eaves. The barn measures approximately 168 feet long and 30 feet wide, divided into 14 bays. On the north side, there are large gabled porches at the 5th and 10th bays, while smaller porches are located on the south side.

The barn is supported by single-stage buttresses with deep weatherings, arranged in a series of offsets at bay intervals, and coupled buttresses at the corners and angles of the north porches. Both the main and porch gables are adorned with carved stone finials. The north porches have wide, segmental archways with chamfered mouldings and dripmoulds, topped by pointed relieving arches with cross-shaped loops above. Each side wall of the north porches features small doorways with chamfered mouldings. The main north and south walls of the barn include plain loops, while cross-shaped loops are present on each main end gable. All loops have wide internal splays, with those in the main gables featuring rere-arches.

Each south porch has a large square-headed doorway with timber lintels and pointed relieving arches. The building has a projecting plinth and retains its original massive timber roof, which consists of 14 bays with two true crucks and 11 two-tier crucks, where the blade passes the tie and engages the upper crucks. Arched wind-braces secure the roof elements. Inside, the barn houses early agricultural implements and machinery. It is scheduled as an Ancient Monument and is under the guardianship of the Department of the Environment. All the listed buildings in Pound Lane form a group.
