Description

Barton Farmhouse is mostly an early 18th-century building with portions dating from the late Middle Ages, originally a grange of Shaftesbury Nunnery. It is L-shaped, with a short wing projecting at a right angle to the main north frontage. This projecting wing is of late medieval origin. The farmhouse is constructed of ashlar, with a stone-tiled roof.

A notable feature is a single first-floor room over a square archway, supported by timbering, with the road passing underneath to the west and Barton Bridge. Diagonal corner buttresses are present, along with stone capping on the roof-ridge and gable-end parapets with saddle-stones.

The main elevation is also of ashlar, with three gables containing attic space. String-courses divide the storeys. Five windows are present, with projecting surrounds, sash windows, and no glazing bars. The centre window on the first floor and all ground-floor windows have semi-circular heads with keystones. The attic window in the centre gable also has a semi-circular head, although without a keystone.

A projecting square porch is located to the left of the main frontage, with a room above it and a gable. The porch features a 4-centred archway with a panel-traceried soffit; above, there’s a 3-light stone mullioned window with 4-centred sub-arches in a square head, and a blocked single-light window in the gable. Stone benches are present along the sides of the porch’s interior. The inner doorway leading to the farmhouse has a 4-centred arch with chamfered mouldings. To the left of the porch is a small section of the main front with a stringcourse and two sash windows in reveals, one to each floor.

The farmhouse is part of a rare complex of medieval buildings which includes the Tithe Barn, and is listed at Grade I for group value. It is currently held by the Wiltshire Historic Buildings Trust. All listed buildings in Pound Lane form a group.
