Description

The Granary at Barton Farm is a Grade I listed two-storey outbuilding dating from the 14th to 15th century. It was originally part of the medieval grange at Barton Farm. The building features a half-hipped roof covered with renewed stone tiles and has two louvered gablets at the north and south gable ends, which are now blocked. The roof is adorned with stone ridge-cappings. The side walls are partly clad in original weatherboarding, with the remainder made of ashlar blocks. There are two wooden wall posts supported on stone corbels in the west wall.

The most notable feature of The Granary is its impressive open timber roof, which is similar in construction to the roof in the north wing of Barton Farmhouse. This roof has two purlins on each side, arched wind-braces, and is divided into three bays by heavy principals with arched braces and couples. Access to the upper floor is via an outside door reached by a flight of stone steps on the west side. There is also a wooden lean-to extension at the south end. The building is currently cared for by the Wiltshire Historic Buildings Trust.
