Description

The Old Gas Works, built in 1834 and later, is located on Frome Road and is now used as the Bradford-on-Avon Urban District Council Depot. The building features an ashlar facade on the north side, highlighted by a large triangular pediment at the gable end, which has a small acroterion at its apex. A semi-circular window in the pediment displays the date 1834 in raised numerals. The pediment is supported by three pilasters with moulded capitals, and there are two windows with raised surrounds between the pilasters, both featuring intact sashes and glazing bars.

To the north, there is a lean-to extension, while a two-storey section adjoins the south side. The south end has curved corners leading to the entrance of the Old Gas Works yard, constructed from coursed rubble with a hipped slate roof. The roof eaves are adorned with a moulded surround and a painted stringcourse. The first floor has three large windows and one small window, all with projecting surrounds and intact sashes with thin glazing bars. The ground floor features two windows of similar design and a central mid-19th century shopfront, which has a fascia with rosettes at each end beneath a projecting entablature. This fascia is supported by two pilasters with moulded panels, capitals, and bases, and the shopfront has curved glazing.

Inside the yard, the east range consists of three former coke-ovens, each with a gable and large segmental-headed archways. These are built from rubble with ashlar dressings and keystones. The south side of the yard includes a one-storey range of coursed rubble with a hipped slate roof and a wooden eaves cornice. There is one window facing Frome Road and two windows facing north into the yard, all with projecting surrounds and sashes with thin glazing bars. Additionally, there are two doors in the yard with plain rectangular ashlar surrounds. This site is included for its group value with the surrounding buildings.
