Description
The North Platform Building at the railway station was constructed in 1848 for the Wiltshire, Somerset and Weymouth Railway. It is built from Bath stone ashlar and features a stone-coped Welsh slate roof with a brick ridge stack that has a diagonally-set flue. The building has a T-plan layout with a cross wing on the east side and is designed in the Tudor Gothic style. It is a single storey structure with a gable-facing side that includes a three-light chamfered stone-mullioned and transomed window. To the right, there is a similar window in a canted bay, flanked by chamfered four-centred architraves. The mid-20th century replacement canopy is supported by decorative cast-iron brackets and continues around the left return. Other elevations maintain a similar style, featuring brackets for a flat hood over the booking hall doorway. Although the interior was not inspected, it is noted to have retained original features, including moulded cornices. The station opened in 1857, with delays caused by a crash in 1848 during track laying from Trowbridge. This building is one of two that form a notable "Brunel-type" group.
