Description

St Leonard's Barn is a Grade I listed structure located in Beaulieu, dating back to the 14th century, with a 16th-century barn built inside it. The barn is constructed from coursed rubble stone, featuring some stone dressings, and has an old plain tile roof covering the replacement barn. Originally, the barn was likely the largest in Britain, measuring approximately 70 meters long and 33 meters wide, consisting of a seven-bay aisled design with porches on either side of the central bay.

What remains of the original barn includes the entire east gable and north wall, most of the west gable, and the eastern part of the south wall. The replacement barn is half the width of the original and occupies the western four bays, utilizing the north wall and west gable, with stones from the original barn repurposed for the east and south walls.

On the north elevation, facing St Leonards Grange, the end bay corresponds to the center bay of the original barn and features buttresses that are remnants of the porch, along with a large segmental-headed doorway with double doors and additional double doors in another bay, as well as on the 16th-century south wall. The north wall includes buttresses between the bays, remnants of the south wall, and the 16th-century south wall. The 16th-century barn has a half-hip on one end. The original gables are supported by tall buttresses with high-set pointed lancets and put-log holes. The roof of the 16th-century barn is constructed using queen-strut design with timbers from the original barn. The site is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
