Description
This is a row of three cottages located on Long Street in Cerne Abbas. They were built in the late 19th century. The cottages are constructed with knapped flint and chalk block walls laid in a chequer-work pattern, sitting on an ashlar plinth. Haul stone is used for the quoins. The west gable end is built of brick. The roofs are covered in asbestos slate, with a cross wing at the east end and four distinctive hipped dormer windows facing the front. Rendered stacks are present, with a cluster of four on the right-hand ridge, a further stack to the right of centre, and another near the eaves at the left end. The cottages are 1½ storeys in height. They have a total of four windows, with the east end featuring two coupled stone mullions with transoms, segmental heads, and a moulded label. The remaining windows are 3-light, 3-light, and 2-light, all with ovolo-moulded mullions and segmental heads with labels above the ground-floor openings. The windows have good cast-iron casements with foliated bosses at the intersections of the glazing bars. Nos. 8 and 10 share a common entrance at the right front, accessed via a lobby with two 20th-century inner doors. No. 12, located at the left centre, has a plank door with ornamental strap-hinges and a weatherboard, with a segmental top light over, dating to the 19th century. This is a significant group of cottages due to the design and the use of chequer-work.
