Description
The Barn at Hurley Farm is a Grade II* listed building, dating from the medieval period, with a probable re-roofing in the 16th century. It is constructed of a combination of chalk, quarry flint, and stone, topped with an old tile gabled roof. The barn has a rectangular plan consisting of eight bays and features a moulded stone eaves cornice, along with a 20th-century concrete buttress on the north end.
On the road front, there are two double plank doors from the 19th or early 20th century, each with segmental-arched heads, with the right-hand door positioned near the center. Narrow, square-headed ventilation openings run along the entire length of the barn.
Inside, the barn boasts tall queen post roof trusses, which include both horizontal and diagonal struts to the principal rafters that decrease in size above the collar. There are two sets of purlins, with the higher set being clasped and the lower set being butt. The barn also features straight, thin windbraces. Historically, this barn was associated with Hurley Priory.
