Description

The Gate House and archway, in Hurley, is a house dating from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of brick and flint, with some clunch, and has an old tiled roof. The building has a rectangular plan with a cross gable on the south side, adjacent to the Refectory, which is listed separately. It is two storeys and an attic in height. A tall chimney is located on the rear (east) roof slope, and a smaller chimney sits on the ridge of the gabled section.

The west front, which serves as the entrance, features irregular two- and three-light, 20th-century leaded casement windows. There are two windows in the attic of the right-hand gable, and four other windows on the first floor. On the ground floor are two large, semi-circular brick arches that have been blocked and replaced with wooden garage doors in the base of the northernmost arch. A four-panel, 20th-century door is located to the right of the arches. To the right, adjoining the house and the church (listed separately), is a stone archway leading to the Cloisters and the Refectory (listed separately). This round-headed arch features a parapet, tile coping, and a niche above the corbel ledge.

The interior of the northern part of the building contains a fine 16th-century roof with arched braces and run-out stops. The cross gable to the south has two bays with staggered purlins dating from the 17th to 18th centuries.
