Description

Oak Tree Cottage is a detached cottage, probably from the 18th century, which has been altered and extended in the 20th century. It features plastered cob walls and a thatched roof, hipped at the right end, with a rebuilt brick stack at the left end. The cottage is one storey with an attic and consists of two bays, with side outshut additions and a rear wing. The central board door is located in an added open porch that has a hipped, thatched, catslide roof. There are flanking 2-light wooden casement windows on each floor, with those on the upper floor set in eyebrow dormers. The left-hand outshut was added around 1960 and has a Welsh slate roof, while the right-hand outshut was added around 1983 and has a pantile roof; neither of these additions is of special interest. The rear includes a right-hand wing from around 1960 and a left-hand wing and rear outshut from around 1983, all with pantile roofs and not of special interest. The main range features one eyebrow dormer with a 20th-century casement. Inside, the main range has a large open fireplace with a timber lintel, old beams and joists, and mortices in the soffit of a cross-beam indicating the position of a former partition between the main left-hand room and a smaller room on the right. The original cob rear wall survives within the additions, and in the attic, eaves plates, crude log purlins, and one principal rafter roof truss are visible.
