Description

Wanganui Cottage is a small house located on Weston Road, likely dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, although it has undergone significant modifications in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of rough coursed rubble, with two courses of large squared stone at the eaves, and features a slate roof. It stands two storeys tall with an attic and has a single window on the front. The windows and the dormer, which are all from the 20th century, include a door to the right. The ground floor window has been blocked and shows remnants of what was likely a three-light mullioned window, with a similar two-light window above it. Inside, the cottage retains a large rough-chamfered beam and stop-chamfered ceiling joists. There is a spiral wooden staircase to the left of a deep fire recess on the right, which includes 20th-century details. This dwelling is believed to have been part of a larger late 16th-century house, which has since been divided into several units, with No. 72 next door being the best representation of the original structure.
