Description
High Croft Cottage is a small detached house located in Portland, dating from the 17th century but significantly altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features rendered stonework and a thatched roof. The front of the house, facing the road to the west, has a broad coped gable on the right and a smaller raised hipped gable on the left. It follows a two-room cross-passage plan, although the interior has been modified in the 20th century. The cottage is one storey with an attic and has two windows. The thatch sweeps down between and on either side of the gables, with 6-pane sash windows above 6-pane 20th-century windows on the ground floor. Near the center of the front is a small 19th-century four-panel door, which is now glazed, accessed by two steps within a stone-cheeked porch that has a flat slab roof. The back of the cottage features a gable on the left with a small square light in the attic, and on the right, there is a very small eyebrow dormer above a narrow light, a door, and a small recessed-chamfer light. There is a 20th-century wing on the left side. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to have been substantially modified in the 20th century.
