Description

The Wesleyan School, now functioning as a church hall, was built in 1878 and is located on Easton Square in Portland. The building is constructed from coursed and squared slightly rock-faced Portland stone or rubble, topped with slate roofs. Originally designed as a single hall, it has since been expanded to include a cruciform layout with added transepts and a rear wing.

The east front features a triple lancet window with an oculus in plate tracery set within a pointed arch, accompanied by a drip course. This is flanked by single lancets at a lower level, all beneath a coped gable that includes a bellcote. A gabled square porch with blocked plank doors sits beneath an inscription that reads "WESLEYAN 1878 SCHOOL." On either side of the porch, there are plank doors set in deep chamfered surrounds.

The south side has rubble returns, partially concealed, which include one pointed light, while the north side showcases three pointed lights with flush quoins and heavy cills, as well as two tall eaves stacks. This side is connected to the main church by a wall built in 1906 that includes a door. The south transept features a coped gable with kneelers above a plain wall. The rear wing has three tall flush lights under a coped gable with kneelers and a central ridge stack.

On the front of the property, there is a dwarf wall that once had railings, and at the left end, a tall square gate pier with a cross-gabled roll-top capping. The building is included in the register mainly for its group value.
