Description
The Methodist Centre is a former Wesleyan Sunday school, now serving as a community centre. It was originally built in 1794, converted into a school in 1878, and underwent alterations in the 20th century. The building is constructed of ashlar stone and features a slate hipped roof. It is two storeys high and has three rows of seven round-arched windows.
The entrance is located at the gable and consists of panelled double doors topped with a fanlight, all set within a shallow porch supported by Tuscan columns that hold up a moulded triangular pediment. On either side of the entrance are four-pane sash windows with stone aprons below, while above are taller eight-pane sashes. The building has a moulded stone eaves cornice, and the triangular pediment over the slightly projecting central three-window section displays a circular stone plaque with raised lettering that reads: 'WESLEYAN/ SUNDAY SCHOOL/ 1878'. The returns feature sashes with glazing bars on the ground floor and eight-pane sashes above. The interior has not been inspected. The original Wesleyan chapel was built on this site in 1794, and a new church was constructed in 1874 on Harrogate Road, which has since been demolished.
