Description

The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel and attached Sunday School, dated 1828 and 1861, are located on the north side of Eggleston along the B6278. The buildings are constructed of coursed squared sandstone with quoins and tooled ashlar dressings. The chapel features a roof made of Lakeland slate with stone gable coping, while the school has a roof of Welsh slate.

The chapel is a two-storey structure with three bays, and the school, positioned to the right, is one high storey with three bays, accompanied by a two-storey, one-bay set-back storage building also on the right. The chapel's entrance consists of a central double six-panel door set in alternate-block jambs beneath a stone lintel, which supports a gabled panel inscribed with 'Wesleyan Chapel 1828' in Gothic lettering. The chapel has renewed four-pane windows above and in the outer bays, featuring flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The quoins and door dressings are notably projecting.

The school has a central six-panel door under a flat stone lintel with a fanlight above, supported by keyed voussoirs. It also features large flanking windows with round heads, projecting stone sills, and margined sashes. The eaves have paired gutter blocks. A slightly lower two-storey bay on the school has a boarded door under a flat stone lintel on the left, with a similar loft opening above it on the right, which has a slightly projecting sill. A small-banded square chimney is located at the right end of the school.
