Description

Stob Green House is a house dating from around 1774, which incorporates an earlier building. It is constructed of coursed rubble, with the upper storey made of smaller stones, and features millstone grit quoins and ashlar dressings. The roof is stone-flagged with a stone ridge. The building has an L-plan layout, with the main house being two storeys high and consisting of three bays, the third of which is wider. The left cross wing is one storey and has five bays on its return to a one-bay front.

Access to the main house is via three nosed steps leading up to a renewed six-panel door, which is topped by a fanlight with Gothic glazing bars set in a raised keyed stone surround that includes impost blocks. The left jamb features an eroded inscription reading W/IT/FB/1774. The windows are renewed sashes with glazing bars in raised ogee surrounds. The roof has gable copings on curved kneelers and two end chimneys with bands.

On the rear elevation, there is a central blocked door and a loft door above it. The left cross wing, originally a separate building, is now connected to the main house by a short passage. The inner return of the cross wing has flat stone lintels over renewed doors and windows, as well as an inserted vehicle door. The outer return features a round opening approximately one metre in diameter, formed by two large stones, which may have originally been used for disposing of manure.
