Description

This is a row of three houses, originally a farmhouse, dating from the early 19th century. The buildings are constructed of coursed and squared stone, with an asbestos-cement slate roof to numbers 46 and 48, and slate to numbers 44 and 44A. To the right end of the row is a former barn unit, set back in a projecting wing with a returned west gable. The houses are three storeys high, but the barn wing is two storeys with equal height floors. There are one, one, and one windows respectively, with 9-pane sashes on the second floor, and 16-pane sashes on the first and ground floors, all set onto heavy stone cills. Modern glazed doors are located to the right of numbers 46 and 48. Number 44 has a good 19th-century flush four-panel door, and number 44A has a wide pair of glazed doors recessed within the original stone lintel. The right gable return of number 44A has two former loading openings, now glazed. The lintels are made of hammer-worked stone, and there are large, rough-dressed quoins. Three brick gable stacks are visible, one between each pair of houses. The barn wing behind the rightmost house is of rubble construction with dressings, with three bays. It features a central doorway with a loading opening above, and openings on each floor on either side. The south-facing gable is plain. The ensemble is well-preserved and, until the late 20th century, remained part of a working farm, originally including a row of arcaded farm outbuildings to the east end, which have since been converted and are not part of this listing.
