Description

No. 72 Weston Road is a house that is part of a row but likely served as the main wing of an original grand house. It dates from the late 16th century or early 17th century and was restored in 1991. The building is constructed of large squared coursed blocks and features a slate roof. It has a broad gabled front that extends forward from the adjacent No. 70, with additional extensions to the left and rear, containing one room on each level. The house is two storeys high with an attic and has one window. The windows are renewed, consisting of two above three above three-light chamfered stone-mullioned designs with stopped drips, and they have carefully replicated iron casement fittings.

To the right, there are two steps leading down to a 20th-century plank door set within a four-centred arch that has a hollow-chamfer surround. The roof has a raised coped verge at the cross saddle and moulded kneelers. The right side of the building features a similar 17th-century two-light window at the first floor. The rear gable wall extends above the roof as part of No. 82. On the left side, there is a broad cross gable with a large stone stack that has been raised in brick.

Inside, the ground floor retains a wide four-centred stone fire surround from the 16th century, which is cracked in the center. To the right of the fireplace is a stone spiral staircase, and to the left is a deep recess that was once a bread oven but has been opened up to create a doorway on the south side. On the first floor, there is another late 16th-century four-centred stone fireplace with moulded jambs and stops, as well as two large transverse beams that have ovolo moulding and stops. The roof principals have trenches for former purlins.

Originally, this building, along with Nos. 68 (now demolished), 70, 80, and 82, formed a larger free-standing house but has since been divided into smaller units, likely in the 19th century. The property was in poor condition until recently but has been carefully restored, preserving as many historical features as possible.
