Description
The Church of St George's graveyard wall, likely built in 1754 with a section at the south end replaced in the 20th century, is constructed from Portland ashlar. This long, roughly rectangular wall encloses the graveyard and serves as a boundary to the road on the east side. The church is situated very close to the Lych Gate, which is centered on the east side. The wall features a series of long stepped panels that follow the changes in the ground line, resting on a square plinth and topped with weathered oversailing coping. At both the north and south ends, there are openings without gates, flanked by square piers topped with heavy pyramidal cappings that rise to about 1.75 meters. The wall generally stands around 1.6 meters high and completely encloses a large graveyard that contains numerous monuments made of Portland stone, dating from the mid-18th century to the present day. This graveyard provides an unusually complete historical record of the island's families over that time.
