Description
The Church of St George lych gate is a memorial to Rebecca Newman Stone, who died in 1934. It is constructed from Portland ashlar and features a slate roof. The hipped slate roof has a lead ridge and a decorative wrought iron cross, supported by two deep lintels on stone cheeks made from paired square piers. These piers are linked by recessed segmental-arched openings above stone panels. The box eaves rest on paired moulded wood brackets on the east and west sides. Inside, there is a coffered wood ceiling. The lintel on the east, or entry side, is inscribed with the words 'To the Glory of God', while the west side reads 'A Shelter for those who mourn'. A stone panel on the south side of the entry notes that the gate is a memorial to Rebecca Newman Stone, and another panel on the north side, which is undated, commemorates Edward and Ann Comben Stone. The churchyard wall meets the lych gate at an angle and features scrolled supporters. There are no gates present as of June 1991. This lych gate serves as a fitting and respectful entrance to the churchyard and church, and it is included for its group value.
