Description

St. George's Centre, Assembly Hall is a community hall that was formerly a school assembly hall, built around 1880. It features fine squared and coursed dressed stone with a slate roof. The building is a simple one-storey rectangular structure with five bays and a gable facing the street. To the left, there is a low wing that is flush with the gable. The hall displays simple lancet detailing, including three stepped lancets above a moulded cill and square blockings, under a relieving arch at the gable, which has coped verges and a saddle-stone. On the right side of the main building, there are three pairs of lancets in flush chamfered surrounds, and to the left, behind the wing, there are two pairs of the same. The wing features a double chamfered segmental-pointed arch leading to plank doors, and in its gabled return, there is a single lancet. The rear gable has a triple lancet similar to the front. There is a 20th-century flat-roofed extension attached to the wing and a large stepped stone stack at the eaves on the left side of the hall. Inside, the hall has arched-braced trusses over unrendered rubble walls above the cill level, and deep embrasures to the lancets. There is also a good Gothick stone hood fireplace to the left. This building is an important part of the overall composition of the Centre.
